Wisdom of the Marsh Thumper
The thump guides

- The Help is AWFUL (re: historical inaccuracies, trivialization of racism, White Savior Syndrome, etc), but it’s the only ONE OF TEN Best Picture nominees to center on female characters and/or a non-white character.
- All of the Best Picture nominees are directed by white men.
- All of the Best Picture nominees are written by white men.
- Of the ten Best Picture nominees, only Moneyball and War Horse have a female producer.
- 4 out of the 5 Best Actor nominees are white (except for Demian Bichir).
- 4 out of the 5 Best Actress nominees are white (except for Viola Davis, who rocked it in The Help).
- All 5 of the Best Supporting Actor nominees are white.
- 4 out of the 5 Best Supporting Actress nominees are white (except for Octavia Spencer, who was also dope as hell in The Help).
- Of the 5 Animated Feature nominees, only Kung Fu Panda 2 was directed by a woman (Jennifer Yuh Nelson).
- All 5 of the nominees for Best Cinematography are men.
- All 5 of the Best Director nominees are white men.
- Film Editing, the most historically “women-heavy” category, still only has 2 of the 5 nominations going out to female editors this year (Anne-Sophie Bion for The Artist and Thelma Schoonmaker for Hugo).
- All 5 of the Best Foreign Film nominees are men.
- All 5 of the composers nominated for Best Original Score are men.
- All 5 of the Live Action Short Film nominees were directed by men.
- Out of the 5 Best Original Screenplay nominees, only Bridesmaids was written by women.
- All 5 of the Best Adapted Screenplays were written by white men.
I know a huge part of this issue is that it’s harder for women and people of color to get jobs in the industry/to get their films made/picked up/etc, but also the Academy definitely doesn’t seem AT ALL interested in reversing this trend.
People I Really Would Have Liked to See Nominated
- Dee Rees (Writer/Director of Pariah)
- Adepero Oduye for her incredible lead performance in Pariah
- Jody Lee Lipes for her stunning cinematography in Martha Marcy May Marlene
- Martha Marcy May Marlene for Best Picture.
- Diablo Cody for Young Adult’s killer screenplay.
- Young Adult for Best Picture.
- Dana E. Glauberman for editing Young Adult.
- Bombay Beach for Best Documentary Feature (one of my favorite films of the year, directed by Alma Ha’rel)
- Miss Bala for Best Foreign Film
- Stephanie Sigman for Best Actress in Miss Bala.
dear sonia, i’m sorry
This is because the Oscars are and always have been an insiders circle jerk for people who’ve put in their dues and happened to make a movie in the process.
